Anglia Square: A Love Story
2019 

Anglia Square: A Love Story was a year-long multi-partner, participatory research, music and theatre project designed to respond to contemporary and historical changes to an iconic area of Norwich at a time of radical redevelopment.

A lot of people got involved in the different elements of the project. Activities included a citizen research group, a community choir, a songbook, a heritage publication, a large scale outdoor theatre show, story-telling events, a website, street performances and creative photography, screen printing and performance work in five city schools. The outdoor show was performed across three city centre stages and in the streets in July 2019 with over 200 cast and choir and an enthusiastic audience of almost 4000.

We worked in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University, Norwich Arts Centre, Norwich City Council, BBC Voices, True Stories Live and many others. The project was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Norwich Freemen’s Charity, the Chivers Trust, Norwich Arts Centre and Norwich City Council.

The project was instrumental to us winning our third Norfolk Arts Award in 2021. this time in the theatre category.

Our children will look back at 2019 and remember when we shared the history of Anglia Square: with our school; with our local community and the City of Norwich. I am so incredibly proud to have been part of this – As I know the rest of our team and school are too.
